Opening for Part-Time Mental Health Professional 


Position: Part- Time Mental Health Professional/ Trauma Informed Adolescent Mentorship Program Supervisor

Reports to: Executive Director


Safe Haven Equine Ministries Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving 12-18 year olds to improve mental wellness and quality of life. We are located in Georgetown, KY. Our vision is to assist in developing well connected, healthy young adults who have a strong sense of identity, purpose, and desire to serve their communities. We strive to accomplish this through the use of outdoor activities, mentorship, and equine assisted activities. Safe Haven plans to launch a Stable Moments Program in August of 2018 and would ideally like to hire to fill this position in February 2018, with the position responsibilities starting in July 2018.


Stable Moments in a non-profit, community, mentorship organization that strives to improve the life course of foster and adopted children. They utilize community mentors and equine facilitated learning to develop life skills, ensuring healthy transitions into adulthood.


We are looking for someone passionate about preventative care and improving mental wellness of individuals 12-18 in your community, specifically those with a history of trauma. We are a small, family-run non-profit seeking someone who is as excited and invested in our mission as our current volunteer team! This will be a new program for us, so we would prefer someone with a great, positive energy who can bring their expertise to help make this program successful.


This will be a part-time, yearly contract position with hourly pay. Ideally we would like to hire someone in February 2018. The position would start the week of April 9, 2018 and run to June 22, 2019, with two weeks off for Christmas. Hourly requirements will be 4 hours at the farm, which does not include travel time. Almost all hours will be evenings and/or weekends, as we operate around school hours. We are flexible and happy to provide time off as our program needs will fluctuate as well. Pay for this position will be $25 per hour, making the total salary for the 10 month term, $6,300 based on 4 hours per week.



  • Facilitate all intake meetings of potential participants, completing intake assessments and assisting to collect enrollment paperwork

  • Monitor the eligibility of mentors through application process

  • Assist with matching mentors to participants

  • Develop and maintain each participant’s plan of care, progress summaries and track activity logs outlining progress toward their EFL goals

  • Supervise and provide support for mentors during and after participant sessions in the beginning and as needed at least on a monthly basis

  • Provide ongoing mentor and parent support, providing feedback, resources and expertise

  • Collaborate with Equine Manager to ensure equine well being and ability to serve participants


  • Maintain trauma informed knowledge by reading research articles, attending webinars and in-person educational opportunities, and speaking with experts

  • Translate most relevant new research, therapeutic parenting techniques and interventions into lay accessible language and communication channels (plain language summaries)

  • Create appropriate foster/adoption targeted content for quarterly newsletter and social media platforms

  • Develop and implement new curriculum, activities and training, keeping the program aligned with best practice, as well as fun and new for returning participants

  • Assist with providing parent resource and educational materials

  • Monitor and respond to participant inquiries with appropriate, accurate and supportive information via email. Phone, online community forums, and website inquiries that fall under your expertise and cannot be answered by Executive Director

  • Represent Safe Haven at community events as available

  • Assist with mentor and participant recruitment as needed

  • Assist with all classroom and onsite mentor training sessions


  • Participate in board meetings when available

  • Inform and educate board as needed for continued professional development


  • Minimum of BSW, MSW preferred (or other mental health or human services degree)

  • Experience with trauma informed care

  • Preferred experience with adolescents, foster care, or adoptive families

  • Equine Specialist in Mental Health Certification Preferred

  • Horse experience and natural horsemanship preferred

  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills

  • At least 1 year experience working or volunteering with a non-profit (small non-profit is a plus)

  • Thrives under time and resource pressures

  • Extremely strong organizational management skills

  • Detail, quality, and results oriented mindset with a strong knowledge of project management, budget processes, and measurement & evaluation of outcomes

  • Sincere commitment to collaborate with team of volunteers, mentors, horses, board members, donors, participants, and director

  • Competency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

  • Ability to travel to Safe Haven at minimum once weekly between 3-7:00pm
